Xherdan Shaqiri Liverpool transfer update after Carabao Cup absence

Xherdan Shaqiri’s Liverpool career could be drawing to a close after he became the subject of transfer interest.

Two clubs have expressed a desire to sign Shaqiri, who the Reds value at around £20million.

The interest meant the attacker was subsequently omitted from the Liverpool squad to face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup fourth round at Anfield on Thursday.

Eyebrows had been raised at his absence given how well the Swiss international had performed in the previous round’s 7-2 win at Lincoln City the previous week.

However, Shaqiri didn’t make the bench for the Gunners’ Premier League visit on Monday.

And it has now emerged two clubs – one believed to be from Italy – have contacted the Reds regarding the 28-year-old.

Shaqiri was a wanted man during the January transfer window with both Lazio and Sevilla keen to take the player from Anfield.

Liverpool, though, had no intention of an exit given they were still competing for both the Premier League and Champions League during the second half of last season.

Shaqiri has been hampered by injury since signing for £13.5m from Stoke City in the summer of 2018, with his appearance at Lincoln a first start since last December.
