Xherdan Shaqiri lifts lid on Liverpool dressing room celebrations after Barcelona victory

Xherdan Shaqiri has opened the door in the incredible scenes in Liverpool’s dressing after their epic Champions League victory.

The winger has had limited opportunities in recent months, but became one of the ‘giants’ of the night Jurgen Klopp spoke about in the victory over Barcelona.

And Swiss international revealed the outpouring of feelings that followed such a miraculous triumph, amid amazing scenes with players weeping tears of joy and sheer unbridled emotion.

“It was crazy. Everyone was shocked, like they couldn’t believe it,” he said with a huge grin.

“We were celebrating, some of the guys were crying. Me? No! I am just so happy, so happy to have helped. We have achieved something so special.”

Shaqiri was given a start in the absence of Mo Sarah, and he didn’t disappoint, with the vital cross for Gini Wijnaldum’s second goal that levelled the scores in the tie.

And he explained there was a sense of destiny about the victory. “Honestly, it is just belief. I say it, always in life you have to believe that you can achieve special things.

“We knew that Barcelona were nervous and when you are in Anfield, anything can happen. What an unbelievable night – maybe the best night there has ever been here.”

Now a final in Madrid awaits for Liverpool the perfect chance to atone for the heartache against Real in the Champions League showpiece in Kiev a year ago.

And the former Munich man is hungry to add to his medal haul. “I have won the Champions League with Bayern and I know what it is like to win this title. It is the biggest one there is to win.

“It is the football stage in Europe, everyone watches you – everyone wants the trophy. I want to win it a second time. We are there in the final and I want to win it with Liverpool. After what we did against Barcelona, we all want to win it."
