Xherdan Shaqiri future at Liverpool latest as Lyon manager speaks out

Lyon manager Peter Bosz has fuelled speculation surrounding the French side's interest in Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri, admitting if they can recruit a good player they "will" when quizzed over the Switzerland international.

Shaqiri has indicated that he is seeking a new challenge after spending three years after Anfield following his move from Stoke City.

Earlier this month, it became clear Lyon had a firm interest in the 29-year-old but sources told the ECHO the two clubs were a “long way apart” on valuation.

Liverpool are keen to recoup around £12m, with reports suggesting Lyon are aiming for a deal closer to £8m.

Shaqiri missed the Reds' last two pre-season matches following the news surrounding his future and the Ligue 1 side's interest. He was also left out of the squad that beat Norwich 3-0 on the opening day.

“If we can recruit a good player, we will, but I can’t say anything,” Bosz was quoted as saying, by RMC Sport via HITC.

He was speaking ahead of this weekend's match with Clermont Foot as the Dutch manager looks to pick up his first win as boss after they drew their opening game before a shock 3-0 defeat to Angers, leaving Lyon second from bottom, only off the relegation places on goal difference.

The quote comes weeks after Bosz admitted quality was needed within his squad, the 57-year-old saying : "I won’t talk about specific positions but it’s clear that we still need good players in every line. We have lots of players, but I need quality in line with our style of play."

With two years remaining on his deal at Anfield and his strong performances at Euro 2020, Liverpool believe Shaqiri's stock has risen.

A number of clubs were reportedly vying for his signature including sides from Spain and Italy.

Sevilla, Villarreal, Napoli and Lazio are thought to be among a number of potential suitors with whom Shaqiri and his representatives have held talks over a move.
