Xherdan Shaqiri 'could leave Liverpool' as Jurgen Klopp eyes La Liga star

Xherdan Shaqiri could be shipped out of Anfield to raise funds for Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze.

The Liverpool forward has struggled to get to grips with Jurgen Klopp's style of play since his switch from Stoke last summer.

After impressing during the early stages of the season, Shaqiri has found game time hard to come by as the campaign has worn on.

Now the Metro report that Klopp could be ready to cut his losses with the Swiss star, in order to bankroll a move for Chukwueze .

The Reds aren't expecting a busy summer in the transfer market, having signed a number of big money targets last year.

Shaqiri was seen as good value for money when Liverpool snapped him up for £13 million.

However, Klopp is keen to upgrade in any areas he can, and Liverpool's sporting director, Michael Edwards, would be confident of making a profit on their investment in the 27-year-old.

That would help fund a move for Chukwueze, who at just 20, has plenty of time to develop his potential.

The Nigerian international has pace to burn, and is seen as ideal back-up to Liverpool's front three.

Shaqiri was initially signed to operate in either wide role, but has been used more sparingly as a central midfielder this season.

Klopp has several options in that position though, and Chukwueze has also played there for his club side as well.

Villarreal are hoping to keep hold of the youngster, who has enjoyed a decent breakthrough year in La Liga.

He has scored five goals in 19 starts, despite Villarreal finishing down the table in 14th.

Klopp could yet decide to cash in on youngster Harry Wilson instead however, with several clubs interested in a £20 million transfer.

It is thought that Wilson will be given the chance to prove his worth in pre-season.

But a number of Premier League sides are keen on his services, along with Hertha Berlin, while Derby want to renew his loan deal.
