Xherdan Shaqiri coronavirus test a false positive in huge boost for Liverpool

Xherdan Shaqiri is free to play for Switzerland after testing negative for the coronavirus.

The Liverpool midfielder returned a positive test only a few days ago when he arrived at the Swiss camp, and was forced into self-isolation.

He became the third Liverpool star in a week following Sadio Mane and new signing Thiago Alcantara to contract the disease.

But Shaqiri has taken a fresh test, which has come back negative.

According to a report from Blick, a blood test showed a negative-positive had been recorded because of "fragments of an old infection".

A likely scenario is that the midfielder had Covid-19 much earlier this year, perhaps in January or February, which is why coronavirus wasn't detected when he was tested at Liverpool before the international break.

The Swiss FA said: "In this regard, the SFV received the information that Shaqiri's positive test result is probably due to a previous infection and that he is therefore not infectious.

"This resulted from an additional blood test carried out with reliable detection of antibodies."

Shaqiri is this Thursday travelling with the Switzerland national team to Madrid. He is expected to represent his country against Spain.
