Xhaka injury: Arsenal vice-captain stretchered off vs Man City after tackle by Guendouzi

Granit Xhaka was stretchered off just minutes into Arsenal’s Premier League return against Manchester City after being injured in a tackle with team-mate Matteo Guendouzi.

The two midfielders were involved in a mix-up that resulted in Xhaka rolling his ankle and falling to the turf.

Only five minutes had been played under pouring rain at the Etihad Stadium when the Arsenal vice-captain was injured, and after receiving treatment on the pitch, he was carried off the field on a stretcher.

Xhaka was replaced by Dani Ceballos, and approximately 15 minutes later Arsenal were forced into another substitution.

Defender Pablo Mari sustained an injury of his own and was substituted, with David Luiz coming on in his place.

Earlier in the evening, Aston Villa and Sheffield United contested the first Premier League game in three months following a coronavirus-enforced break.

The two sides drew 0-0 at Villa Park, with United controversially being denied a goal despite the ball crossing the goal-line.

Hawk-Eye later apologised for the fault in the goal-line technology, which failed to recognise that the ball had crossed the line when Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland stumbled backwards after catching an Oliver Norwood free-kick.
