XFL players can begin signing with NFL teams today

The XFL’s return was brought to a sudden end by the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite only playing half of a 10-week season, many XFL players will have an opportunity in the NFL during the 2020 season. For many of these players, the XFL was a shot to play professional football and showcase that they belong in the NFL. Those opportunities will begin today as NFL teams officially become allowed to sign former XFL players on Monday at 8 a.m. CT.

One of the biggest stars from the league, Houston Roughnecks QB PJ Walker has already landed a contract. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, he’ll sign with the Carolina Panthers to backup QB Teddy Bridgewater.

Players from each team in the XFL had their moments, even the teams with the league-worst record (Tampa Bay Vipers and Seattle Dragons) had players deserving of a shot. Several of the statistical-leaders played enough games to separate themselves and build a nice portfolio of tape for NFL teams. Now they’ll sign with teams under unique circumstances, with facilities closed across the league due to concerns over COVID-19.

We’ve already identified several players that the Kansas City Chiefs could be interested in signing. Given the current salary cap constraints, it would make sense to see an addition or two from this league in Kansas City. Just as the team did with former AAF Orlando Apollo’s CB Keith Reaser, they could look to add players who formerly spent time with the Chiefs and went on to become standouts in the XFL.
