Xbox Tests Ad-Supported Game Streaming With Xbox Insiders, With a Catch

Xbox has begun testing a new ad-supported way to stream games without needing an active Game Pass subscription, rolling out the trial exclusively to Xbox Insiders starting this week.

The move gives players a way to access select titles for free, though it comes with a few notable restrictions.

Xbox Tests Ad-Supported Game Streaming For Insiders

According to an official announcement on Xbox Wire, Xbox Insiders with an Xbox account can now stream select games from their library for free by watching ads beforehand. Play sessions are limited to one hour across supported devices and regions, and Xbox says the ads will only play before a session begins rather than interrupting gameplay itself.

Xbox framed the test as part of a broader effort to expand access to games on devices players already own. The company noted that cloud streaming can also let Xbox One owners play newer titles built for Xbox Series S and X without needing to buy new hardware right away.

The company said advertising has existed in gaming for decades in various forms. However, it has not always been built with the player's experience in mind, and this test is meant to explore whether ads can help lower the barrier to accessing games rather than getting in the way.

Xbox Ad-Supported Game Streaming Has a Catch

While the test removes the need for a Game Pass subscription, it isn't a free-for-all across Xbox's entire catalog. Players participating in the test can only stream games they already own, along with select free-to-play titles like "Call of Duty: Warzone," "Genshin Impact," and "War Thunder."

Titles confirmed for testing so far also include owned games such as "Forza Horizon 6" and "007 First Light."

More than 1,800 games in the Xbox Store currently support cloud streaming, but the ad-supported test doesn't grant access to that full library, only to titles a player already owns outright or free-to-play games available to everyone.

According to sources familiar with the test, ads run for up to two minutes before a session begins, and if a player continues streaming past their initial hour, another round of ads plays before the next hour-long session starts.

Free Game Streaming Coming to Xbox Soon?

Xbox has not confirmed whether this test will lead to an official ad-supported streaming tier down the line, stating only that the company plans to learn from the trial and continue improving it based on how players use it and what feedback they share.

No timeline has been given for how long the test period will last or when, if at all, it might expand beyond the Xbox Insider program.

If it does eventually roll out more broadly, an ad-supported streaming option could offer a more cost-effective way for players to stream games they already own across different devices without paying for an ongoing subscription.

Reports from earlier this year also pointed to a related Microsoft initiative, internally referred to as "Project Lapland," aimed at expanding Xbox Cloud Gaming's infrastructure to support streaming a much larger portion of players' owned game libraries. The report suggested that this ad-supported test could be an early piece of that larger push.
