Xbox Live has suffered a major outage leaving online gamers unable to use their consoles.

The tech giant confirmed that there had been issues with core features as the server went down on Tuesday night.

Customers reported that they were unable to access their previously purchased games and films.

Others complained that they were unable to use their console at all as they could not log in to the server.

Xbox’s support team confirmed it was working to fix the issue surrounding accessing games, movies and TV.

It said in a statement on Twitter: “We've seen your reports about issues accesing your previously purchased games, movies & TV.

“We have teams working on it now. We'll update you as soon as we can with more details.”

The Xbox Live server page carried an error page warning there have also been issues with "buying items, redeeming codes, or downloading purchases".

But the warning also reportedly claimed that logging in and playing games were working as normal.

This page is being updated.
