Xavi urges Barcelona to rival Manchester United for Jadon Sancho transfer

Barcelona legend Xavi has urged his former club to rival Manchester United for their primary transfer target Jadon Sancho.

MEN Sport understands United are very interested in completing a summer move for the Borussia Dortmund winger, who has shone in the Bundesliga since moving from Manchester City's academy.

But there are others clubs keen on Sancho and Xavi, the legendary midfielder who won multiple trophies at Barca, believes his former club should be in the race.

The ex Barcelona skipper, who now manages Qatar Stars League football club Al Sadd, also name-checked Paris Saint Germain superstar Neymar and Bayern Munich's Serge Gnabry as ideal signings for his old side.

"I would sign wingers," he said. "Players like Neymar – I don’t know if he would fit because of the social aspect, in a football sense I have no doubts he would be a spectacular signing.

"Barcelona have good players through the middle but they lack wingers like the ones Bayern have. They don’t need a lot of new players: Jadon Sancho, Serge Gnabry."

Xavi said he believes Barcelona still have a world-class squad and the signs are good at his former club for the future. Barca knocked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage in the 2018/19 campaign and reached the last 16 this season before coronavirus brought the season to a halt.

"A major part of the squad is extraordinary. The goalkeeper is the best in the world. Jordi Alba is the best left-back in the world; Sergio Busquets is the best defensive midfielder in the world and Lionel Messi is the best player in the world," added Xavi.

"If you add to that [Luis] Suarez and Frenkie de Jong and Arthur [Melo] who seem to me like players who could succeed at Barcelona for 10 years, then the foundation is good."
