Xavi in epic Jadon Sancho fail as Barcelona legend stumbles over Manchester United target's whereabouts

Given his job in Qatar, Barcelona legend Xavi is perhaps a bit detached from all things European football these days.

But surely not this much?

The iconic midfielder, recently offered the manager's job at his old club, appeared to get himself in a twist this week over Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

In fact, he seems to believe the young Englishman, touted for a big money move to Manchester United plays for Dortmund's rivals Bayern Munich.

Asked to discuss where he'd take the club's transfer policy, in particular whether he would re-sign Neymar, Xavi appeared to make the unfortunate gaffe.

"I'd sign wingers, like Neymar, I don't know if he'd fit in because of social reasons," Xavi said. "But as a player, I have no doubt he would be a spectacular signing.

"Barcelona already have players who can play inside but lack wingers like Bayern have. They don't need a lot of new faces, Jadon Sancho, Serge Gnabry."

Xavi was also quizzed over his dream Barca starting XI, but remained suitably diplomatic.

He added: "A lot of the squad seem extraordinary to me. Starting with the goalkeeper, who seems to me the best in the world.

"Jordi Alba is the best left-back in the world for me, too.

"Pique the best centre-back, Busquets the best defensive midfielder and Messi, the best player in the world.

"If we add Suarez, De Jong and Arthur, there are players to triumph for 10 years at Barca. The base is very good."
