Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso remained tight-lipped on Thursday regarding rumors surrounding his potential move to the Premier League or Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich. The Spanish coach, who is currently under contract with Leverkusen until 2026, refrained from providing any new information on the matter.
Leverkusen, under Alonso's guidance, currently leads the Bundesliga standings, holding an eight-point advantage over reigning champions Bayern Munich. The team's impressive form has sparked speculation about Alonso's future, particularly in light of Bayern's announcement that they will part ways with coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.
Alonso, a former player for Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2017, has been at the center of rumors linking him to a potential coaching role at the Bavarian club. However, the 42-year-old coach emphasized that his focus remains on leading Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title, which would break Bayern's 11-year dominance in the league.
Addressing the ongoing speculation, Alonso stated, 'Maybe you have questions about my future, but I have nothing new to say about that. I wanted to say that in advance.' He further added, 'For me, this [speculation] is not a problem. I know that my goal is to be successful with my team. That is my job. We are currently in a good position, and we want to keep at it.'
Alonso has also been linked with a potential move to Liverpool, following Jurgen Klopp's decision to step down as coach at the end of the season. Having enjoyed a successful playing spell at Liverpool from 2004 to 2009, Alonso's managerial prowess has garnered praise from Klopp, who described him as the 'standout' manager of his generation.
When asked about his future with Leverkusen, Alonso expressed confidence, stating, 'That is what I assume.' Leverkusen is set to face Mainz in their upcoming fixture on Friday as they continue their pursuit of Bundesliga glory under Alonso's leadership.
