Xabi Alonso faces Chelsea goalkeeper decision as Filip Jorgensen asks to leave

Filip Jorgensen has informed Chelsea of his desire to leave the club in pursuit of more first-team game time.

The Dane, 24, has struggled to impose himself in west London since signing from Villarreal in 2024.

He has played second fiddle to Robert Sanchez for most of his time with the club, but was a more regular selection during Liam Rosenior’s brief managerial tenure.

Jorgensen was dropped after making a glaring error late on at Paris Saint-Germain in March and later suffered a groin injury which required surgery and kept him sidelined for much of the run-in.

And Standard Sport understands he is prepared to leave the club this summer in search of more regular first-team football.

Chelsea are thought to be open to a sale should they receive a suitable offer.

They were open to his exit in January but a move that suited all parties did not materialise, and so he stayed.

Highly-rated 20-year-old shot stopper Mike Penders will rejoin Chelsea this summer following his loan spell at Strasbourg and is expected to usurp Jorgensen in the club’s goalkeeper hierarchy. With his minutes set to decrease further, the sense is that Jorgensen’s departure could suit all parties.

Penders, whom Chelsea signed from Genk last summer, played 52 times for Strasbourg this season and was subsequently named in Belgium’s World Cup squad.

The goalkeeper position has been under plenty of scrutiny at Stamford Bridge this season, with both Sanchez and Jorgensen producing high-profile errors at various points of the campaign.

The club looked into signing AC Milan’s Mike Maignan last summer, but could not agree on a fee with the Serie A club. The Frenchman subsequently signed a new contract with the Rossoneri.
