X Social Media Platform Updates Blocking Feature

Recent modifications to the blocking feature on social media platform X have stirred up a debate among users and experts. The update now allows accounts that have been blocked to still view public posts of the blocker, unless the account is set to private. However, blocked accounts are restricted from interacting with the posts by replying or reposting them. Additionally, blocked accounts cannot follow the blocker, and vice versa.

The platform's Help Center page was updated to clarify the new blocking functionality, emphasizing that the change was implemented to protect users who have been blocked. The update aims to enhance transparency by notifying users if someone they have blocked visits their profile.

While X claims that the alteration will prevent the sharing of harmful or private information about blocked individuals, critics argue that the change could have adverse effects, particularly on victims and survivors of abuse. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential for abusers to exploit the new feature to monitor and harass survivors, jeopardizing their safety.

Experts in the field of computer security and tech abuse prevention have expressed apprehension about the impact of the revised blocking policy. They stress the importance of empowering survivors of intimate-partner violence to control their online visibility as a crucial safety measure.

Since assuming control of the platform in 2022, the CEO has implemented several policy changes, including the relaxation of restrictions on hate speech and harassment. These actions, purportedly in support of free speech, have drawn criticism from those advocating for a safer online environment.

Despite the platform's efforts to address user concerns and enhance transparency, the recent update to the blocking feature has ignited a broader conversation about the balance between user safety and freedom of expression in the digital realm.
