X-Men star Nicholas Hoult auditioned to play a major Game of Thrones character

It's hard to picture anyone other than Kit Harrington donning all black for the role of Jon Snow.

The 32-year-old perfectly embodies the Game of Thrones character and is beloved by fans across the world.

But it turns out he had some very strong competition way back when.

X-Men and The Favourite actor Nicholas Hoult has recently revealed that he also was up for the part in the fantasy show.

And his tale about the rather unsuccessful audition is short but pretty darn hilarious.

The 29-year-old, who most recently starred as J.R.R. Tolkien in the film Tolkien, opened up about the experience to Page Six.

Speaking while at the Montclair Film Festival, he said: "I think I auditioned for Jon Snow.

"I remember it because I was filming Clash of the Titans at the time, so I had very long hair extensions."

He added that he wore his hair in a ponytail for the audition and also had a "very patchy tan" at the time.

"I remember being like, 'this is probably not what they were hoping for'," he added.

"And it obviously wasn't."

He didn't get the part and didn't think too much of it - but now the show is one of the most popular of all time.

The hype surrounding the HBO series hasn't concerned Hoult too much though - he isn't even watching it.

The actor admitted to watching the first season, but failed to keep up after that.

However he did say he might watch the rest next time he's "laid up in bed with the flu for a couple of days".

This news comes after Maisie Williams admitted she almost didn't go to her Game of Thrones audition.

The 22-year-old is famous for her role as Arya Stark.

However she told Lorraine Kelly that she nearly passed up the opportunity to go on a school trip to a pig farm.

She said: "I desperately wanted to go on a school trip instead - good job I didn't! I wouldn't be here now."
