X-Factor host Dermot O’Leary records message of support for dad's old GAA club ahead of fundraiser

X-Factor host Dermot O’Leary has lent his support to his Dad’s old hurling team.

The popular presenter recorded a video to help raise cash for a Wexford GAA club.

His dad Sean was a hurling champion with the Faythe Harriers before emigrating in the 1960s.

The club are now running a bumper fundraiser, the ‘Win the House’ draw, and the top prize is a property worth €405,000.

Dermot O’Leary said: “Hello everyone the Faythe Harriers are a GAA club in Wexford town, who are very close to my heart.

“My dad used to play for the Faythe Harriers.”

The video appeal was recorded in the BBC Radio Centre, where Dermot hosts his own breakfast show on BBC Radio Two.

He joked that he was worried the organisers are flogging his own London pad.

“I am delighted to endorse the Win the House campaign, which I think you win my house.

“Which I am not overly happy about, but apparently you can raise money for the new clubhouse.”

Wrapping up the video plug, Dermot said: “So to get involved and you can win a house worth €400,000 in County Kildare, I don’t know how that happened, no where near Wexford.”

Dermot’s parents Sean and Maria are both from Wexford town, but emigrated to England as a young couple in 1968.

The pair returned in the summer of 2017 and have now settled in Baldwinstown, outside Wexford town.

Speaking at the time of the move Dermot said: “My dad, immediately, has been watching hurling and camogie every weekend so he seems pretty happy.”

Sean missed out on the chance of an All Ireland medal when the yellow bellies scooped the Liam McCarthy Cup in the same year he left.

He later took up a spot with London giants the Father Murphys.

In 2014, he was honoured with a Sean Ghael Award for his contribution to Wexford GAA.

The citation described him as a star performer who won three county senior hurling medals with the Faythe Harriers.

It also noted that his blonde head ensured he was always a marked man.
