Wythenshawe primary school pupils told to stay home after confirmed coronavirus case

Children at a Manchester primary school are being told to stay home after a confirmed case of coronavirus.

Parents with children in the Year 1/2 bubble at Newall Green Primary School in Wythenshawe received a message from the school alerting them shortly before it was due to open on Monday morning.

It stated: "There has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 in your child's Year 1/2 bubble. Please stay at home until we have had further health and safety advice.

"We will let you know as soon as possible what the next steps are."

Following further discussions, they restricted the self-isolation to just one class from Year 1.

Executive headteacher Sarah Rudd said: "We were alerted first thing this morning before school started to a confirmed case within the school. We took the decision in the interests of keeping all children and staff safe to err on the side of caution and ask two year groups to remain at home today, pending further advice from health officials. No other year groups were affected.

"Since then we've had detailed discussions with health colleagues who have advised that just one class of pupils and teachers will need to isolate and stay away from school for the next 14 days, whilst the rest of the classes in the two year groups and their teachers can return to school tomorrow.

"School already has all the required safety measures in place, however as an extra precaution all the classrooms in the two affected year groups are also in the process of being deep cleaned in preparation for pupils' return."

What schools must do if a pupil or staff member tests positive for Covid-19

Elsewhere in Salford a whole year group is having to self-isolate after a confirmed case at a high school.

Year 7 pupils at Buile Hill Academy in Pendleton must now stay at home until September 18.

They had only been back to school for three days after the academy opened on Wednesday (September 2) to Year 7 students.

In a letter sent to parents on Sunday which has been sent to the M.E.N, headteacher James Inman said a member of the 'Year 7 bubble' had tested positive for Covid-19.

It has not been confirmed whether the confirmed case is a pupil or staff member.

All other pupils at the school have been told to go to school as normal.
