Two QB system in Laramie?
Wyoming football is about a month away from spring football and many more until the 2020 season begins and there are already questions swirling about the quarterback position.
Last time we saw Wyoming it was Levi Williams throwing for 234 yards on 11 of 26 passes to go along with three touchdowns, plus he ran for 53 yards and a touchdown. That also was his first career start.
Williams got the nod when Tyler Vander Waal decided to enter the transfer portal after the season finale until the bowl game, and season-long starter Sean Chambers was hurt.
Chambers was the leader of this Cowboys team but it was built on his leagues and not his passing game which was minimal at best, but he suffered a knee injury that will keep out for the majority of spring football.
Head coach Craig Bohl told the Casper-Star Tribune that he is “leaning toward” playing two quarterbacks.
“We’ll try to have Sean come along physically in the course of the summer, but we’re not going to rush Sean along just to try to get him out there to get some repetitions,” Bohl said. “We’re going to make sure he’s able to come back and be more than just serviceable.”
Chambers has his own issues and completed just 45.9 percent of his passes for his career and that decreased to 43 percent this past season. However, his ground game was what carried Wyoming as he rushed for 567 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Williams has very little experience under center but his throwing ability makes it a smart choice for Bohl to look at giving him reps whether it be the outright starter or split time with Chambers. Williams can also run as well so that might give him an edge when combining both skillsets, and that is something that Bohl really likes with both.
“The fact both of these guys show a really good ability to run at times that are pre-determined and at times are unscripted, that really opens up our playbook,” Bohl said. “Now we would not like to have them run as much as we have, but the dual-threat of both of those guys I think warrants that both of them are going to get a really hard look. (Former Florida coach) Steve Spurrier ran quarterbacks in every other play. I doubt we’ll do that, but I think you could see both of them play.”
Usually having two quarterbacks play is not ideal and does not work well for the most part. However, having two quarterbacks that are both really good which helps with depth and it just depends on how Bohl will implement these two signal-callers. There will be a competition this fall so we will see how this situation develops.
