Wycombe ponder legal action to relegate Wayne Rooney's Derby over alleged spending breach

Wycombe Wanderers are said to be contemplating legal action against Championship rivals Derby County.

Saturday's final day of the season was full of drama, with the Rams staying up by just a point - ahead of Wycombe who took the third and final spot.

Derby are involved in a long-running battle with the EFL. Last August the club were cleared of both charges put to them in January 2020, one relating to the sale of the club's Pride Park Stadium to owner Mel Morris and the other about how the club amortises the value of its players.

The EFL appealed the second charge and the club is still awaiting the outcome.

Now, Wycombe owner Rob Couhig, an American lawyer, says the club may potentially fight to get the Rams punished this season - something that would give a reprieve to the Chairboys.

He said: "I don’t know that the season is over yet.

“To me, we have accumulated all the points we can and now we will see what happens.

“People tell me that Derby County have issues out there. I don’t know whether we’re ready to go to lawyers yet. The message is: Watch this space."

Sheffield Wednesday - whose draw at Pride Park was not enough to save them from the drop - suffered a points deduction last season as a result of breaching spending rules.

The Owls were given a 12-point handicap, later reduced to six. Without that, Darren Moore's side would have finished outside the bottom three.

If Derby are deducted points, it remains to be seen whether that will apply this season and retrospectively keep Wycombe up.

The alternative would see Wayne Rooney's side start the 2021-22 Championship season on minus points.

As it stands, Rotherham United, Wednesday and Wycombe make up the current bottom three.
