Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth pays Pep Guardiola the ultimate compliment ahead of Man City clash

Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has admitted that he will be "humbled" to share the touchline with Pep Guardiola when his side faces Manchester City in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

After getting the better of League Two sides Exeter City and Stevenage in the first two rounds of the competition, the Chairboys' reward is a first clash with City since 1999.

Since the two sides last met, both clubs have headed in very different directions, with City making a name for themselves as one of the biggest clubs in the world and Wycombe providing miracles in the Football League, with the Buckinghamshire club applying their trade in the Championship last season.

Although Wycombe's main priority this season is the bread and butter of League One and fighting for promotion back to the Championship, the trip to the Etihad Stadium promises to be a special occasion, not just for the fans but for boss, Ainsworth.

The Wycombe chief, looking ahead to his side's trip north, has been full of praise for City boss Guardiola, admitting that he would like to discover his secret to being so successful.

"I'm hugely respectful of Pep Guardiola," said Ainsworth. "He's an amazing manager and I'll be humbled to be sharing a touchline with him.

"I'd love to pick his brains and find out how he's been so successful."

Although Ainsworth's success does not quite match the levels achieved by Guardiola in his career, the Wycombe boss has put the Adams Park club on the map in recent seasons, guiding them from League Two to the Championship in just two years.

They earned themselves a lot of friends on that trip and were unfortunate to be relegated straight back to League One last season.

The Chairboys have enjoyed a relatively solid start to the season, winning four of their first seven league games, meaning they will fancy their chances of producing a huge cup upset and ending City's dominance in the Carabao Cup.
