WWE wanted to FIRE Triple H following incident after match, reveals insider

A WWE insider has revealed how close Triple H came to being fired over the infamous 'Curtain Call' incident at Madison Square Garden.

Triple H has become one of the most important figures in WWE history over the last two decades but his professional career was almost finished before he could have any impact at all.

In 1996, he was involved in the 'Curtain Call' incident alongside Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash and Razor Ramon.

Having defeated Nash, Michaels broke character - he was a face at the time - to hug Ramon before Triple H - a heel - entered the ring and all four wrestlers embraced.

Nash and Ramon were due to leave WWE for WCW and the event in New York was their last before their departure.

It was the first time that 'kayfabe' had been broken inside a WWE ring and show executives were furious with the wrestlers.

However, with two of the stars involved heading to a rival organisation and Michaels the champion, it seemed as though Triple H was the one who would carry the can.

Luckily for him, though, former WWE, WCW and TNA writer Vince Russo was able to talk his colleagues around.

"Curtain Call happened at Madison Square Garden," Russo told 411 Mania .

"Kevin Nash and Scott Hall went to WCW. Shawn Michaels was the champion, so they weren’t going to touch him.

"So, who was going to be the whipping boy? Triple H.

"They were gonna bury Triple H, and they were gonna torture Triple H. And they were gonna humiliate Triple H.

"And they were going to make his life miserable for doing that one thing.

"And because I was there, I was able to say, 'What are you guys, Children? First of all, nobody believes wrestling is real.

"So, you’re getting all upset with this freaking ‘Curtain Call.’ I mean, at the time, Bruce Prichard and Jim Cornette wanted Triple H fired.

"They wanted him fired. That’s how pissed off they were."
