WWE superstar issues apology after insulting fan with homophobic slur

WWE superstar Rhea Ripley has issued an apology after using a homophobic slur during a live stream.

The former NXT UK champion was gaming with other NXT stars on social media platform Twitch on Wednesday evening.

During that, fans could pay $15 to be insulted by Ripley - in either English or Spanish - or pay $20 to receive a compliment.

Ripley was 'tipped' $15 by a viewer who asked to be insulted and she replied by calling them a "stupid motherf****** f*****".

Ripley immediately faced a huge online backlash as the clip quickly went viral.

Writing her apology on Twitter , Ripley said: "Demi Bennett speaking here: I know a lot of you are upset with me after tonight, but I just wanted to publically say that I am sorry.

"My brain to mouth filter came down for a second and I forgot that some words are a big no no to a lot of people. I am a firm believer that everyone should be treated equally, whether that be race or sexual orientation.

"With that said, I just wanted to say how dearly sorry I am to everyone that was offended by my choice of words tonight."

The stream, hosted by NXT  Superstar Brennan Williams, has since been removed.

Ripley was snapped up by WWE in 2017 after impressing in Australia, and was crowned the inaugural NXT UK Women’s Champion in 2018.

She also appeared in this year's Royal Rumble.
