WWE announce Wrestlemania 35 main event - and it includes Ronda Rousey

For the first time in WWE history a women’s match will headline WrestleMania as Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair challenge Ronda Rousey.

WWE has confirmed the triple threat Raw Women's Championship match will main event the Show of Shows at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, April 7.

The showdown has been rumoured to be the match to headline the card since Lynch, aka 'The Man', won the Women’s Royal Rumble Match back in January.

It also ends any speculation that the Universal Championship contest between Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins might be chosen over it to close out the extravaganza.

The Man has seen her popularity soar since her ‘heel turn’ back at Summerslam 2018 on Flair and was recently named as the company’s top merchandise seller.

Fans have clamoured to see her face off with Raw Women's Champion Rousey, ever since their proposed match at Survivor Series in November was called off due to Lynch receiving a facial injury at the hands of Nia Jax just days beforehand.

And despite the inclusion of Flair into the match – and a disjointed buildup in recent weeks – both Becky and former UFC icon Ronda are managing to maintain the buzz for the bout through their constant war of words on Twitter.

It is the latest step in WWE's Women's Evolution – a journey which arguably began three years ago at WrestleMania 32 with the retirement of the Diva's Championship, which then led to the company's first ever all women's pay-per-view – Evolution – in October last year.

In a statement, WWE said: "Ronda Rousey is the current Raw Women’s Champion, Olympic medallist, the first female UFC Champion, and the first woman to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. She is also an actress and New York Times bestselling author.

"Charlotte Flair is a seven-time Champion in WWE, a former Division 1 volleyball player, philanthropist and author. She is the daughter of two-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair.

"Becky Lynch is the 2019 Women's Royal Rumble winner, a two-time SmackDown Women’s Champion and was named Wrestler of the Year by both Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports in 2018. She was also the first woman ever to top ESPN's WWE Power Rankings.

"At WrestleMania 32 in 2016, WWE re-branded the Divas Division the Women's Division and unveiled a new Women's Championship title.

"Since that time, the women’s evolution has placed a greater spotlight on WWE’s female performers, including more prominent storylines and deeper character development that showcases their athleticism, charisma and star power."
