The World Surf League will return to action after a three-month hiatus, with officials giving round one the green light to commence in Newcastle on Thursday morning.
John John Florence heads into the Newcastle Cup at Merewether Beach as the men's leader, having beaten Brazilian Gabriel Medina in the final of the Pipe Masters in December 2020.
Australia's Tyler Wright will wear the yellow jersey after she overcame local favourite Carissa Moore to win the women's Maui Pro.
That round three months ago was the only held so far in 2021, with others including the Sunset Cup in Florence's home of Hawaii, Gold Coast's Snapper Rocks and the the annual Easter Bells Beach Classic, cancelled or rescheduled due to COVID-19.
The new calender has instead lined up four consecutive competitions in Australia, with Narrabeen next, followed by Margaret River and Rottnest Island in Western Australia.
Head-high waves are forecast for Thursday's surfing, with the men's first round to be followed by the women's.
