WRU finally confirm Rowland Phillips has left role as Women's head coach

Rowland Phillips has left his role as head coach of Wales Women, the WRU have confirmed.

The dual code international mysteriously disappeared off the radar after naming his squad for Wales' autumn matches.

He was also absent for the recent Six Nations.

And in a statement, the union revealed that the 54-year-old has departed in a bid to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

A WRU statement read: "The Welsh Rugby Union confirms that Rowland Phillips has left his role as National Women’s Head Coach and Performance Programme Lead, having been in post since July 2016.

"Rowland Phillips left his role as he wanted to seek other opportunities.

"The Welsh Rugby Union would like to thank Rowland for his contribution and commitment during his time with us and wish him well in his future endeavours."

Phillips won 10 caps for Wales in rugby union between 1987 and 1989 and played for his country's rugby league side on four occasions in the 1990s.
