Writers Festival offers $5000 to keep emerging writers in ink through COVID-19

ARTS REVIVAL: Newcastle Writers Festival director Rosmarie Milsom said the regional literary scene needed writers to keep writing after the impact of COVID-19.

Fresh Ink - the $5000 literary prize made available to emerging writers from regional NSW - has been reignited in Newcastle after its inaugural run in April this year.

The prize offers an as-yet commercially unpublished writer living and working outside of Sydney the sum of prize money as well as access to a 12-month self-directed creative development program, which Newcastle Writers Festival director Rosemarie Milsom hopes would continue to support writers, particularly in the regions, after the impact of COVID-19.

"We need people to continue writing, especially in the early stages when it can be particularly challenging," she said. "The festival has always focused on providing opportunities for regional writers and the prize cements this."

The $5000 sum has been provided by Newcastle wine label Elephant in the Room, and marks the second iteration since it was established in direct response to the impact of the pandemic on the Newcastle and regional NSW literary scene. Writers aged over 18 years, and living outside the Sydney metropolitan area can apply. Applicants are required to provide a writing sample of up to 3000 words in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

The prize opens for submissions on June 14. A shortlist will be announced in August, and the winner will be announced during the Newcastle Writers Festival on September 25.

Terms and conditions, and further entry details are available via the Newcastle Writers Festival website.
