Writer Chris McQueer turns TV presenter for new documentary exploring Scottish banknotes

Chris McQueer is no stranger to fame after making a name for himself as one of the country's best loved young writers.

But tomorrow night we will get to see a difference side to the star as he tries his hand at TV presenting.

Chris will host a one-hour documentary on BBC Scotland and dig deep into the lives of some of the great Scots who have been deemed worthy of having their face printed on banknotes.

The author of the cult classic Hings said filming the show "lifted his spirits" and proved to be a real eye opener.

Chris travelled to Skye for the series and spent time exploring Scotland’s “secret coast” on Otter Ferries and even sees the oldest notes in Scotland and meets the designers and artists who create our contemporary notes.

He said: “I feel like my spirits have been lifted. I feel like a tourist in my own country.

"It’s just amazing seeing all these places for the first time, hearing all these amazing stories. It’s just been the most interesting, most fun I’ve ever had.

"It’s just so brilliant! I’ve loved every minute of it."

The show features stories from some of the country's lesser known heroes, including the Aberdeen-born missionary, Mary Slessor, who is revered in Nigeria for saving the lives of hundreds of twin babies and fighting for women’s rights, and   Dr Elsie Inglis, the Edinburgh native worked on the frontline in Serbia during the First World War, saving countless lives.

Noteworthy with Chris McQueer will be shown on BBC Scotland channel at 10pm on on Tuesday April 14.
