Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine this week, Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo revealed the band are "ending for a while". This followed recent news that co-founders Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon had separated after 27 years of marriage.
Sonic Youth have had a long and prolific career, releasing 16 studio albums from their 1982 debut to 2009's The Eternal, and influencing critically acclaimed bands including Nirvana, Radiohead and Placebo, and more or less every guitarist who enjoys playing feedback.
Rather than ask for reviews of each album (which would be an epic read), for this Friday's panel we'll be featuring four pieces from readers who have a strong personal connection with Sonic Youth – whether a deep love, abiding hate or both. Tell us about your favourite album, when you first heard them or ssaw them play live – it's up to you.
If you would like to participate, please email adam.boult@guardian.co.uk before 9pm Thursday 1 December, with 200-300 words on what Sonic Youth mean to you. Please include your Guardian username and your real name. We'll pick four entries for publication. The subject line of your email should be "Sonic Youth". Please let us know if you object to having your real name used.
