Wrigley Field visit in Patrick Mahomes’ future?

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — While the Bears whiffed on their chance to land Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Chiefs quarterback does have a loose connection to Chicago. His dad, Pat Mahomes, pitched for the Cubs in 2002, and his godfather, LaTroy Hawkins, did so in 2004 and ’05.

Patrick Mahomes never lived in Chicago — the family was based in Tyler, Texas — and was just 7 at the time.

“I actually don’t remember my dad being on the Cubs,” he said, unsure whether he ever went to a game at Wrigley Field. “But when he was in Des Moines on the Triple-A team, I remember going on the field and playing shortstop.

“I want to go back to Wrigley. It’d be amazing. I wish I got to see him pitch there.”

Patrick Mahomes might have gotten a chance to play there had he stuck with baseball. The Tigers drafted him in the 37th round in 2014 and he played collegiately, but gave it up to concentrate solely on football.
