Wrexham unveil new kit complete with quirky commentary video from Hollywood owners

Wrexham haven't gone about things in a straightforward manner since being taken over by a pair of Hollywood A-listers.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's purchase of the non-league club made headlines across the footballing spectrum back in 2021.

And since then they've gone about trying to raise the profile of the club, despite them having been in the fifth tier for the last 15 seasons. Since the duo's arrival, the club have released a collection of quirky marketing videos and goofy trailers.

And so for the launch of their new home kit for the forthcoming season the high-profile owners were always likely to think outside the box. What they came up with is a 37-second clip using dry humour to promote their new strip.

The video features close-ups of the new shirt with voiceovers from the owners, with Reynolds relentlessly slapped down by McElhenney. Reynolds opens up by saying: "Here's Wrexham's new home shirt. I love the new red" before McElhenney interjects saying: "It's the same red as before."

Reynolds continues to bang the same drum saying: "I'm all about the new red" prompting a response from his co-owner: "Listen man, you really need to get your eyes checked - and your ears."

The video has gone down a storm with neutrals on social media, whilst Wrexham fans speak highly of the new design. A trailer recently dropped for a documentary focusing on the Dragons following the pair's takeover.

The series, titled 'Welcome to Wrexham', will be first broadcast in the UK on Disney+ and will be available to watch from Thursday, August 25.

Such was the impact of the trailer that Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman professed his desire to watch the upcoming series.

The Aussie replied to an Instagram post by Reynolds containing the trailer by saying: "I'm in a puddle of happy tears and covered in chill bumps. I can't wait to watch. I am in love with Wrexham... and you. #WelcomeToWrexham."

A promotional trailer for the documentary was released last year which saw Welsh mum Maxine Hughes steal the show. The 41-year-old answered a flyer asking for a Welsh translator and she ended up starring in a global ad with megastar Reynolds.

Speaking about her involvement, she said: "It was a nice surprise to learn what it was about because my grandad is from Wrexham and if there’s anything I can do to put North Wales on the map, then I’m up for that.

"For me it’s such an important thing for the Welsh language to be heard.”

Whilst the club is gaining plenty of attention off the field, the owners know that ultimately they need to win promotion back to the EFL as soon as possible. Last season saw them fall short in the play-offs but manager Phil Parkinson is ready to try and go one better in 2022-23.

"The disappointment's happened and there's so much positivity in terms of what the club's trying to achieve on and off the pitch," said Parkinson. "Slowly but surely we are piecing the squad together to make sure we are stronger than we were last year."
