Wrexham star's cheeky message to Paul Mullin after hat-trick - and Ryan Reynolds loves it

Paul Mullin was stitched up by his Wrexham team-mate after the striker scored a hat-trick on Saturday - and it appears celebrity owner Ryan Reynolds enjoyed the humour.

Mullin netted three goals as Wrexham soundly defeated Oldham Athletic 5-1 at the Racecourse Stadium on Saturday. Mullin has now scored 28 goals for the Welsh side this season.

The win means Wrexham returned to the summit of the National League, with the club sitting three points clear on 100 - a new record points tally - with a game in hand on second-place Notts County. Amid the celebrations, it appears one member of the squad took a lighthearted dig at Mullin while celebrating the success of the women’s team.

A fan tweeted a photo of Mullin’s ball adorned in signatures, with one cheeky message added on. One of Mullin’s Wrexham team-mates wrote ‘Rosie woulda got 4’ - with the tweet liked by Reynolds.

The message referenced Wrexham Women’s forward Rosie Hughes, who scored a late winning goal as the women’s side won the Genero Adran North - the second tier in Wales.

A record crowd of 9,511 for a women's domestic fixture in Wales came to the Racecourse to see the team crowned champions last Sunday. Both Reynolds and McElhenney were in attendance and were seen joining in the jubilant celebrations.

After the win over Oldham, Wrexham's Hollywood owner duo took to social media to praise the performance. Reynolds suggested the team ‘played angry’ while McElhenney tweeted a gif of his show ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ to suggest Mullin hasn’t ‘even begun to peak’.

Back in November 2020, Deadpool star Reynolds teamed with McElhenney - famed for creating and starring in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ - to purchase Wrexham for £2.25m. The duo have become symbols of Welsh football around the world with the publicity and exposure their platforms have bought to the club and the area, largely through the popular Disney+ documentary titled ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ - which was a hit in the United States.

The duo clearly have big plans for the future as they openly talk about reaching the Premier League, while they have organised a friendly contest against top-flight giants Manchester United this summer. The Red Dragons’ clash with Erik ten Hag’s side is scheduled to go down in San Diego at the Snapdragon Stadium in July, forming part of United’s preseason tour of the US - their first since 2018 - which will likely feature a match in Las Vegas.

The game is the opening match of United’s preseason tour to the United States, which will heavily feature young players from the United squad as well as Academy prospects. The match with Wrexham will go down on 25 July as part of a week-long training camp in San Diego.
