Wrexham's Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney immediately react to Notts County promotion

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney each gave their congratulations to Notts County after they followed Wrexham into the Football League, having beaten Chesterfield in a dramatic play-off final.

Luke Williams' side racked up a superb 107 points in the regular season but still finished second to Wrexham, who edged the only automatic promotion place. Notts County were forced to go into the always unpredictable play-offs, needing a 120th-minute winner to advance beyond their semi-final against Boreham Wood.

And when it came down to the all-important final at Wembley, Williams and co found themselves 1-0 down after just minutes. A late equaliser from John Bostock took the game to extra-time, during which opponents Chesterfield took the lead again before being pegged back by Ruben Rodrigues' equaliser.

Goalkeeper Archie Mair then saved two penalties in the shootout, having been subbed on by Williams shortly before full-time in what proved to be an inspired substitution. Shortly after the final whistle, as Notts County began to celebrate, both Wrexham co-owners, Reynolds and McElhenney, wasted no time to show their classy side by tweeting messages of congratulations.

"Congratulations @Official_NCFC!!!!" Reynolds wrote to his more than 21 million followers. "What a game, what a season, what heart. We will see you in the EFL next." McElhenney added: Never a doubt. Congratulations @Official_NCFC!!!!!!! What an extraordinary run. See you next year ;)"

The pair of co-owners were desperate to see Notts County go up to League Two alongside Wrexham, with Reynolds telling BT Sport after the Welsh club's title win in April: "This entire story, the reason we're sitting on the edge of our seats right now is because Notts County is so damn good as well.

"They deserve to go up. It's something Rob and I feel quite strongly about. We are rooting for Notts County. We want to see them go up to League Two and face them next year. They're incredible."

What made Notts County's season even tougher was the recent passing of CEO Jason Turner, with Reynolds adding: "Also what makes it so special is how powerful, how special, how unique Notts County is. They are the real story here. What they've done this season... losing their CEO, Jason Turner.

"Who I have grown to know and learn he was beloved in Notts but also here. I have such enormous respect for everything they've built and done. It's just insane to me that in this league just one goes up automatically. If it were different - and I think it should be - both of these clubs would be celebrating together right now.

"Because what they've done is... not only created drama unlike anything you've ever seen in a damn movie, but something that people will talk about for ages. The fact that this much attention has come upon the National League in this way I think is incredibly special and immensely worthy of the talents not only of Wrexham but Notts County as well. What they've done is so special - so unique."
