Wrexham granted special transfer dispensation amid Hollywood owners' spending spree

Big-spending Wrexham will be able to process transfers as normal after being handed special dispensation by world governing body FIFA.

The Dragons, heavy favourites to win this season's National League, appealed over what they say was a disadvantage of being subject to transfer windows despite participating in a division which does not have one. It means the Welsh club, like the other 23 fifth tier sides, will be able to sign players up until March 2023.

A statement on the club's website said: "Wrexham AFC can confirm a request was made to FIFA, to consider the competitive disadvantage suffered by the Club, as a result of being a Welsh Club playing in the English pyramid and in a domestic competition (National League - Step 1) which isn’t required to observe Transfer Windows/Registration Periods.

"Having considered the case put forward by the Club, FIFA have granted dispensation for the 2022/23 season from the relevant regulations, to ensure equal treatment with the other Clubs competing in the National League and protect the integrity of the competition.

"Wrexham AFC will therefore be able to register players up to the fourth Thursday in March, with the same freedom as other Clubs in the National League. The dispensation for 2022/23 will allow time for a permanent solution to be identified with the National League for 2023/24 onwards. The Club would like to thank FIFA, The FA of Wales, and the FA, for their support in achieving this positive outcome."

Phil Parkinson's side begin the new campaign on Saturday at home to Eastleigh. They are odds-on favourites to end their 15-year hiatus from the Football League thanks to another impressive summer of signings.

Will Wrexham win promotion this season? Let us know in the comments

The club have been propelled into the limelight thanks to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's takeover in early 2021. The Hollywood duo have pumped funds into the infrastructure and playing squad and later this month more exposure will be gained thanks to a Disney+ documentary focusing on the club.

The new arrivals include former Luton Town forward Elliot Lee and Oxford winger Anthony Forde. Earlier this week Boreham Wood's Jacob Mendy and Southend's Sam Dalby were also recruited.

Wrexham fell short at the play-offs last season, losing to eventual winners Grimsby Town in the semi-finals, but boss Parkinson is determined to bounce back stronger this time around.

"The disappointment's happened and there's so much positivity in terms of what the club's trying to achieve on and off the pitch," Parkinson said. "As much as we'll take that on the chin, there was a real good feel about the club straight away from the start of pre-season. Slowly but surely we are piecing the squad together to make sure we are stronger than we were last year."
