Wrexham given surprising National League title odds despite Hollywood owners' bold claims

Wrexham, the non-league side owned by a Hollywood duo and with big aspirations, are NOT the bookies' favourites for promotion next year.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and star Rob McElhenney took control of the Welsh club earlier this year.

They have big plans to transform the under-achievers with a documentary 'Welcome to Wrexham' is in the pipeline and sponsorship from social media giants TikTok already in the bag. They raised more eyebrows earlier this month when they appointed ex-Sunderland and Hull boss Phil Parkinson as manager.

But despite their ambition and backing, the bookies do not have the Dragons down as favourites to lift the National League title next season.

Instead, Stockport County are the shortest price. That's perhaps understandable given the Hatters finished third last season and were beaten in the play-offs by eventual winners Hartlepool.

Their semi-final 1-0 loss was a first defeat in 18 for County and they'll be confident of coming back stronger next season.

As for Wrexham, Parkinson is under no illusions as to what the demands are in his new role.

Reynolds and McElhenney said: "Once we knew Phil was interested, he was our man and we got him.

“Phil has an immediate objective of gaining promotion but is conscious of our ambitions for the club and embraced each element of our vision.”

Wrexham start the new season on August 21, at home to Yeovil.
