Wrexham dog attack: Man killed after mauling as police remove animals from home

A man has died following a dog attack at a property which is home to several animals, one of which has since been euthanised.

A number of police cars and ambulances rushed to the property in Wrexham, North Wales, on Holt Road, following the incident on Monday morning around 11.44am.

Welsh Ambulance Service reported that a 62-year-old male was in cardiac arrest after being bitten by a dog at the property.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. "The man’s next of kin have been informed and our enquiries into this incident remain ongoing," a police spokesperson said.

A local told The Mirror that he woke at around 11.30am to the sound of a man screaming and the muffled growls of a dog.

“I heard what I thought was a dog attacking a man. I heard the man screaming," he said.

“It was not a blood curdling scream. It seemed like the dog had him and he was trying to get it off.”

Paramedics and police were on the scene soon after.

Another resident said two or three “vicious” bulldog type dogs had often been seen fighting with each other in the garden of the house.

“They are vicious, you don’t want to go near them. They are not the type of dog you want to mess with. You would think twice before petting them.” she said.

A local man earlier said that the owner of the dogs bred 'American Bullies' - American Bulldog type animals - at the property.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: “I understand they were breeding and then selling the dogs.”

They believed that the owner's father, or his partner's father had been looking after the pooches while he was away watching Wrexham's football team play at Wembley.

When the father let the dogs out, one of the animals attacked him, causing him to go into cardiac arrest, the local said.

The family was believed to be on their way home from Wembley as the incident unfolded.

Family members have requested that their privacy is respected at this time.

The dog was securely contained at the property and was euthanised by a vet at the scene.

Other dogs kept at the property have been removed by trained dog handlers and will be temporarily kennelled whilst enquiries are ongoing.

A spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called this morning, Monday, May 23, at 11:33hrs to reports of a medical emergency in the Holt Road area of Wrexham.

“We sent three emergency ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and the Wales Air Ambulance to the scene."
