WrestleMania to continue amid coronavirus crisis as Vince McMahon makes unprecedented crowd decision

The world's biggest wrestling event, WrestleMania, is set to go ahead next week despite the coronavirus outbreak.

Speculation was mounting whether WWE would join the likes of the SPFL and MLS in cancelling the event of April 5th.

And on Monday the promotion announced that whilst WrestleMania will still go ahead two weeks from Sunday, it would no longer be held in Tampa's Raymond James Stadium.

Instead, it will be held at WWE's own Performance Centre, with no fans in attendance.

In an official statement, WWE said: "In coordination with local partners and government officials, WrestleMania and all related events in Tampa Bay will not take place.

"However, WrestleMania will still stream live on Sunday, April 5 at 7 pm ET on WWE Network and be available on pay-per-view. Only essential personnel will be on the closed set at WWE’s training facility in Orlando, Florida to produce WrestleMania."

Whilst WWE had been holding their weekly TV shows RAW and SmackDown at the Performance Centre this week under similar circumstances, it had been thought that WrestleMania would have been delayed until later in the year due to the financial effect of the event.

The decision to hold the show - which normally attracts thousands of fans from across the world each year - behind closed doors is an unprecedented move.

However, owner Vince McMahon is known for his 'show must go on' mentality and showing WrestleMania on the WWE Network may provide fans something to look forward to in this time of global uncertainty.
