Wreckreation Review Roundup: Creative Sandbox Racer Lands With Mixed Critic Scores

Wreckreation has officially launched, and critics seem split on whether Three Fields Entertainment’s ambitious sandbox delivers on its Burnout-inspired promise. Across PC and consoles, reviewers consistently praise the creativity and freedom the game offers, while also pointing to technical shortcomings and a flat open world.

On PC, Wreckreation currently sits at a 69 Metacritic score (with 70% mixed reviews), while PS5 — the console most reviewers reviewed the game on — currently holds a 68 Metascore. On Steam, the game currently sits at “Mixed” after over 200 reviews.

What Critics Like

Many reviewers agree on one thing: Wreckreation is overflowing with creativity. The game’s signature LiveMix system — allowing players to build ramps, loops, and entire race routes on the fly — is the standout feature. Try Hard Guides and CGMagazine gave the game high marks for its seamless building, praising how players can race, crash, and create without menu interruptions or load screens.

The sense of speed and chaos also received positive attention. From aggressive driving to explosive takedowns, critics have said that Wreckreation successfully channels pieces of Burnout‘s high-speed DNA. For some, that was enough. GameBlast called it a “great racing game” with exciting events, varied environments, and the potential for hours of creative mayhem.

A few outlets also highlighted the size of the development team. Despite only ten people working on the project, several reviewers said the game manages to accomplish things that bigger studios haven’t. Hardcore Gamer noted that while the game has flaws, it’s still a thrilling and occasionally hilarious destruction sandbox once you settle into its rhythm.

What Critics Don’t Like

The biggest shared complaint is polish. Across reviews on all platforms, critics pointed out technical issues — pop-in, odd physics interactions, AI problems, and bugs that break immersion. Push Square said the game has “bags of potential,” but is undermined by iffy handling and a lifeless world.

Many reviewers also felt Wreckreation leaned too hard on Burnout nostalgia without capturing what made those games special. DualShockers described it as a “blatant copy” of Paradise, arguing that the racing systems feel repetitive and the world lacks personality. Others said the driving simply isn’t strong enough to carry the experience when the novelty wears off.

Even positive reviews emphasized caveats. Multiple outlets called the game fun “once you get used to the jank” or said it’s best enjoyed in short bursts — especially in multiplayer, where user-generated challenges shine brightest.

The General Consensus

With “Mixed” player feedback on Steam and similar sentiments from critics, Wreckreation feels like a game full of inspired ideas held back by uneven execution. For creative racers, car-crash chaos fans, and Burnout diehards, there’s plenty to enjoy. For everyone else, the game might need a few patches before it reaches its full potential.
