Wreaths laid in Princes Street Gardens for Scotland's war dead

Scotland's war dead have been remembered in a service in the city centre today.

Servicemen and women gathered in Princes Street Gardens to open the capital's Garden of Remembrance.

It comes ahead of Armistice Sunday, when the country traditionally pays tribute to the people who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Former Black Watch commander Lieutenant General Sir Alistair Irwin said services like these mean a lot to those who have lost loved ones. And he said he was impressed with the attendance despite the weather.

He said:

"Despite the awful weather today, I feel there are more people here today than there have been in past years.

"For all those that attend, there is a memory that is brought back to life - people who've been killed or wounded in action - these memories come to life on these occasions. This is a very special moment to remember them."

Wreaths were laid in the garden, in the shadow of the Scott Monument, and a poppy stall has been taking donations.
