WR Tyron Johnson is making an impression at Texans training camp

The Houston Texans are set at the wide receiver group with DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, and Keke Coutee. However, injury could strike at any time with Fuller and Coutee, so the Texans need options.

The undrafted rookie from Oklahoma State is make an impression in camp, giving the Texans coaching staff something to think about should they need an extra receiver.

“Good speed, hard worker, out here every day,” coach Bill O’Brien said of the 6-1 wideout Monday at Methodist Training Center. “You can see why he was a productive guy at State.”

What has helped Johnson adjust to the speed of the NFL, at least what he has been exposed to thus far, is his ability to stay on the practice field.

“With all those guys, it’s so new,” said O’Brien. “There’s so much more man coverage and different coverages and route adjustments. If they’re out here every day, they have a chance.

When you’re not out here every day — availability equals dependability. So, if you’re not out here every day, it’s hard when you’re a younger player. I think he’s worked very hard to try to improve.”

Johnson ran a 4.52 and played in the All-American Under Armour game. Not only was the former All-American a playmaker in Oklahoma State, but Johnson is built like a tank. He almost looks like a linebacker playing the wide receiver position. Ranking in as the 28th in the nation when coming out of high school, it’s easy to understand why Johnson has impressed O’Brien.

With the fifth wideout spot open for competition, Johnson stands a good chance at making it to the roster. All he has to do is keep impressing O’Brien, which is something that Johnson appears to have already done. Now, he has to consistently stay on the practice field and not let an injury derail him.
