WR Lance Alworth named 62nd best player in NFL history

Way before wide receivers Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins, Odell Beckham Jr., Julio Jones and Mike Evans came a player that revolutionized the position: Lance Alworth.

Alworth was one of the best players to suit up in a Chargers uniform. He finished as Chargers Wire’s No. 6 player in franchise history.

In the eyes of USA Today, they see “Bambi” as 62nd best player in league history in the past 100 years.

In 1962, Alworth was drafted by both the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders immediately traded his rights to the San Diego Chargers.

It only took him a year to develop into one of the best players in American Football League (AFL) history and one of football’s most prolific deep threats.

He was a playmaker, posting seven consecutive 1,000-receiving yard campaigns, a total of 9,584 receiving yards and 81 touchdowns in nine seasons with the Chargers.

For his efforts, Alworth was a seven-time AFL All-Star and was the first AFL player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978.
