NEW YORK — New Jets wide receiver Corey Davis says he believes in Sam Darnold.
Davis, who signed a three-year, $37.5 million free-agent deal, was asked about the Jets’ quarterback situation Tuesday morning in a Zoom press conference.
“Yeah, I mean, the situation is what it is,” the former Titans receiver said. “Obviously, I’m coming in with my understanding that Sam is the guy, and no, that doesn’t scare me away at all. I’ve seen Sam do great things, and I have all the belief in him. Whatever direction they decide to go, it’s on me to make sure that I’m ready. Come in, be ready to catch from whoever.”
When asked in a followup question on if he signed knowing Darnold would be the starting quarterback in September, he responded: “Yes, that’s my understanding.”
That was an interesting sell-pitch to Davis.
Last season, Darnold was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL. He threw for 2,208 yards with nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He completed 59.6% of his passes and had a passer rating of 72.7, which was dead-last in the NFL. He finished last among qualifying quarterbacks in QBR at 40.2. Pro Football Focus ranked him 35th out of 38 qualified quarterbacks with a grade of 58.
The Jets have been rumored to be thinking about moving away from Darnold this offseason and draft another quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
The Jets were also rumored to be interested in Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson. General manager Joe Douglas even admitted when speaking to the media on March 3 that he was listening to those trade offers on Darnold.
“I will answer the call if it’s made,” Douglas said in a Zoom call with reporters. “If calls are made, I will answer them.”
So, something isn’t adding up, but we’ll see as the offseason continues to progress.
