George Buchner’s 19th century opera was widely regarded as the first truly modern drama. Inspired by the real-life story of a barber who, in a fit of jealousy, stabbed his mistress and was sentenced to death, Buchner’s fragmentary opera was a tragedy, social critique and debate on free will.
Jette Steckel directs this Thalia Theatre Hamburg production, presenting a social drama that deals with madness, obsession and murder. In Robert Wilson’s 21st century revival, with songs by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, Woyzeck remains as raw and unforgiving as ever. Woyzeck loves Marie, but he is just a soldier on the fringes of society. He sacrifices his body and sanity to an arrogant doctor’s medical experiments. Two worlds are created: one of the poor German underclass and another of introspection through Waits’s English songs.
