Wout Weghorst regrets Man United antics in penalty shootout that left Brighton player in tears

Wout Weghorst says he regrets kissing the ball before handing it to Solly March during the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday afternoon.

The Dutch striker slotted his penalty into the back of the net past Robert Sanchez before picking the ball up and giving it the 'kiss of death' when handing it to the Brighton and Hove Albion player. March stepped up during the sudden death shootout and blazed the ball over the bar. It allowed Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof the chance to send Erik ten Hag's side through to the showpiece which he did with ease.

March was spotted leaving the Wembley pitch in tears as the Man United players celebrated setting up a cup final with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in June. Fans of both teams took to social media to hit out at Weghorst over his lack of sportsmanship during the tense semi-final with ended 0-0 after 120 minutes.

Speaking following the match, Weghorst said: "Yeah, I already said it actually before we started to some of the guys but nobody did it. I scored and then I saw the ball and tried to get a few advantages which could maybe help us win it.

"I walked to him and said some things, but at the end (of the match) I went to him because I felt also a little bit sorry because obviously this was the one that they missed. I just tried everything and normally it doesn't make a difference but maybe it did."
