Giant striker Wout Weghorst has earned himself a huge pay rise with his shock loan move to Manchester United.
The 6ft 6in Holland international had already enjoyed an increase on his £60,000 a week Burnley earnings with a summer loan switch to Besiktas, the leading Turkish side tempting the 30-year-old with a salary upgrade.
Now United have pushed his earnings even higher to around double what he was banking at Turf Moor to bring the forward in line with the salaries of the Old Trafford first team squad. It’s no wonder that Weghorst was determined to cut his season long loan in Istanbul short when United boss Erik ten Hag registered his interest in signing his fellow Dutchman.
He has also supported United since he was a boy growing up in Holland and looked upon the Old Trafford approach as a chance of a lifetime.
United have agreed to compensate Besiktas for the loss of a player who scored nine goals in 18 games, handing over a cheque for £2.5 million.
Burnley who signed Weghorst from Wolfsburg for £12 million last January after losing Chris Wood to Newcastle United will be hoping to recoup or even better that fee in the summer if the player is a success and United make the deal permanent.
Weghorst with just two Premier League goals in 20 games couldn’t help keep the Clarets in the top flight and there has been some bemusement from Burnley fans with his move to Manchester United.
Although there was a glimpse of what he could have achieved with his two goals for Holland in the World Cup quarter-final against eventual winners Argentina.
Ten Hag will be hoping the big striker can replicate that as he prepares to make his debut against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night.
