Would you dare to wear a human hair sweater?
Fashion and technology got married some years ago and now, is the time to bear the fruits of this labor of love. Fashion designers and scientists have worked together for many years to come up with fabrics that are environmental friendly and sustainable and the latest example of this road to finding green fabrics, is an attempt by a Dutch designer, to make fabric out of human hair.
Amsterdam-based designer Zsofia Kollar has created a variety of textured and patterned fabrics using human hair, which otherwise often ends in the dust bin.
According to the designer, "Human hair is a keratin protein fiber just like wool or alpaca," and that's how it can be used to make various clothes.
The designer hit headlines for the first time when she designed the first 100% human hair sweater. The designer's official website explains the creation as, "Sourced, designed and manufactured in the Netherlands, degraded no soil, used no pesticides, polluted no water, 100% biodegradable with a carbon footprint close to zero."
"Human Material Loop researches the concept of humans as a sustainable material of the future and proposes an alternative material to integrate into our daily products. Hair has been playing an important role in our lives, from defining our identity it also shows the religion we associate with or the political ideology we believe in. But why don't we look at human hair as a material itself?," adds the website.
Kollar creates different kinds of fabrics using human hair, at the time when 72 million kgs of human hair ends up in the landfills of Europe alone. Kollar's company, Human Material Loop, is working towards integrating “human waste hair into a closed loop recycling system”, as stated on her official website.
