Classic car fans may wish they had a cool $23 million to spend for a ride that may smash a sales record. The McLaren mentioned below comes with an interesting history and a well-known former owner.

Also here are seven other car brands driven by the wealthy.

Ellison’s Ownership

The McLaren F1 was first bought by Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison in 1997. It’s now listed for sale through Sotheby’s with an assessed value of more than $23 million. If it brings in a price near that value, according to Forbes, it’ll become the most expensive McLaren ever sold. Ellison can certainly afford nice things. Forbes listed his net worth at $299.7 billion, easily making him one of the richest individuals in the world.

History of the Car

One interesting aspect of this car is that it’s only been driven around 6,500 miles in the nearly 30 years since it was first purchased. It’s called chassis No. 062 and has only been owned by three people. It was one of a few McLaren F1s brought to the United States through Ameritec in the 1990s.

Oversight for Safety

Perhaps the fact that this car “slid under the radar” may be another strong selling point. The F1s that came into the U.S. required modifications to pass federal standards. But per Forbes, it’s believed those changes were only made to the first car imported and not to the others — including the one for sale.

Still, it’s legal to drive even with this oversight. Also, per Sotheby’s, the original seven are still the only F1s to be considered road legal in California, where the one for sale remains.

According to Forbes, the McLaren F1 is still the fastest naturally-aspirated production vehicle ever produced. When it comes to the one up for sale, it’s seen a few McLaren special ops post-production upgrades. They include enhanced air conditioning, radiators and sports exhaust.
