Would Newcastle United make the European Premier League based on richest clubs?

Newcastle United would currently miss out on any European Premier League if selection was based on the wealth alone.

A European Premier League made up of the continent’s richest clubs would include seven sides from England.

Plans for a new Europe-wide league run by FIFA broke on Tuesday afternoon.

The tournament is expected to be made up of 18 clubs and could start as early as 2022.

A total of five English clubs are reportedly set to join the new European Premier League, but if money were the main motivation behind its creation, then England could claim a right to have seven clubs in the competition.

That’s how many English clubs are in the top 18 of Deloitte’s annual Football Money League.

Barcelona topped Deloitte’s rankings of the world’s richest clubs in 2018/19, the latest for which figures are available.

The Catalan club had an income of £741.1m.

That put them ahead of Real Madrid (£667.5m), Manchester United (£627.1m), Bayern Munich (£6581.8m), and PSG (£560.5m).

Manchester City were in sixth place (£538.2m), Liverpool were in seventh (£533.0m), Tottenham in eighth (£459.3m), Chelsea ninth (£452.2m), Arsenal 11th (£392.7m) and West Ham 18th (£190.7m).

Newcastle dropped out of the top 20 last year but were 19th in 17/18. The Magpies had a turnover of £176.5m in 18/19, close to Napoli in 20th with £182.8m.
