Would-be robber chased out of Dublin bookies after drenching staff in 'petrol'

A would-be robber was chased out of a Dublin bookmakers by customers after he threw a liquid onto staff that he claimed was petrol.

The scary incident took place at a bookies on Meath Street just before 9pm on Wednesday night.

A source told Dublin Live that two female staff were soaked with the liquid, and that the robber threatened to set them alight if they did not hand over a sum of cash.

But two customers - one of whom was armed with a chair - stepped in and accosted the robber, who was then chased out of the premises.

Gardai said that, thankfully, nobody was injured during the course of the incident.

They also confirmed no arrests have been made yet.

"Gardai attended an incident of an attempted aggravated robbery that occurred at a betting premises on Meath Street, Dublin 8 at approximately 8:50pm yesterday evening, Wednesday, 3 November 2021," they told Dublin Live.

"A man entered the premises and demanded cash from staff before fleeing the scene empty-handed.

"No injuries were reported over the course of this incident.

"No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."
