Would a Laquon Treadwell trade be worth considering for Giants?

The New York Giants’ wide receiver issues this summer have been well-documented. Corey Coleman’s ACL, Sterling Shepard’s fractured thumb, Golden Tate’s impending suspension (and now concussion) and various other nicks have hampered the group since training camp began.

But as we’ve written, that hasn’t dampened the outlook of the unit as the Giants have racked up 646 receiving yards over their first two preseason games.

All of that aside, it is still possible the Giants seek to add another veteran to the group. Not sure who this could be or how or where they would fit, but the Giants are likely looking for someone who can fill Tate’s role over the first month if they aren’t comfortable with their internal options.

One player who could pique the Giants’ interest, per NJ.com’s Matt Lombardo, is Minnesota’s Laquon Treadwell, a former first-round pick who has not lived up to expectations.

Treadwell, 6-foot-3 and 218 pounds, never quite lived up to his first-round billing, but was one of the top prospects at the position coming out of Ole Miss.

In three seasons, Treadwell caught 56 passes for 517 yards and one touchdown. During his two seasons playing for Shurmur, Treadwell combined for 21 catches for 215 yards in 25 games.

Injuries limited Treadwell’s production and playing time during Shurmur’s tenure as offensive coordinator, but the Giants head coach was once optimistic that he would become a legitimate weapon on the passing game.

“He’s made huge progress,” Shurmur said, back in 2017. “In order for us to be a really good offense, he’s got to play well.”

Treadwell checks all the Giants’ boxes. He’s a first-round bust who has played in one of their coach’s system and he’ll come relatively cheap. He’s also an Ole Miss kid.

But not all players are a fit, sometimes.

Treadwell is not an upgrade over the players the Giants already have on the roster. It is difficult to see him outperforming Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler or Russell Shepard at this point.

If he were a free agent, I could see the Giants taking a look at Treadwell. But is he worth trading for? Probably not. Look elsewhere is my advice.
