BEIJING -- Northern China was widely hit by sandstorms on Monday, with its meteorological agency calling it the largest in a decade.

The air pollution level in central Beijing reached the worst level in the six-tier warning system. A yellow haze covered the city, bringing visibility down to a few hundred meters and leading to the cancellation of many flights.

The sandstorms were caused by yellow sand from Mongolia and northwestern China, with the lack of precipitation and high temperatures making it easier for the sand to be swept up, according to the China Meteorological Administration.
